Madrid-bound Cristiano Ronaldo could be a pouting, preening pratt, but 60-odd goals in two seasons buys you a lot of pratt space…

But United fans will be looking at the fee, making an assumption that it won’t be used to fund the Glazers’ debt and will be spent on other players and will think its perhaps all for the best.

There was quite a nice piece in The Times the other day which put Cristiano Ronaldo as United’s 50th best player ever – one behind Mark Robins. It wasn’t a slight on his undoubted talent, but, as the piece said – United legends don’t want to play for Real Madrid.

United legends stay at the club (Giggs, Scholes), they track back and tackle (Rooney) and when they kiss the badge, they do it to taunt Scousers (Neville).

Ronaldo's an incredibly talented player, but his talent was most used to further himself and his own ‘brand’. United often benefited from that talent as a happy by-product and we’ll miss the goals, though not the hands on hips, the shrugs, the eyes to the skies pleading from the referee. When he was doing that, he was our pratt. Now he’s going to be somebody else’s it’s different entirely…

But it won’t be quite the same without this:

Take the money and run

Assuming that the Glazers don't trouser most of the money. That is quite possible, they are almost in as much trouble as Tom Hicks and George Gillett at the "pool".

It has got to be for the best to have Ronaldo away, especially at Real, who MUFC are unlikely to play until next Easter, at the earliest.

Until the Porto game, where Ronaldo was used as an out and out striker, he was barely worth his place in the team. When playing in wide positions he would attempt to skin every defender on his side of the park: the result being lost possession. He always remained a threat in the air.

Against Arsenal the lone striker tactic worked again. It worked again, for 10 minutes, against Barcelona. But where was the plan B?

Berbatov was brought in to lead the line with Rooney in the support role. Time this was given an extended chance to work. Personally I hope Tevez does end up at Man City, not a particularly talented player.

Luis Antonio Valencia; Karim Benzema and a replacement for Owen Hargreaves (who is starting to look like a lost cause). Finally Brede Hangeland from Fulham to cover for the statuesque Vidic (whose lack of pace will be cruelly exposed next season). There it didn't take long to spend the wedge from offloading Ronaldo

maradona, i swear to god you are clueless. best is arguably the greatest we've had, so to say he wouldn't lace ronaldo's boots in brainless. and a crisis?? three league trophies on the bounce, and two champions league finals on the spin as well as a number of other trophies. that suggests to me there's no crisis. you need a neurosurgeon pronto. you watch how Real don't win a thing next year...
