Ron Atkinson never fully recovered.  Will Dick Best?

"You've always got to have a coloured boy in the team" isn't quite on a par with Atkinson's "fucking lazy nigger", but I suspect a hefty reprimand will soon be forthcoming.

it seems this country and the media pick and choose what is racist and who is talksport radio refuse to even mention the remark or appology by sky on there show yet this same radio station and its presenters are happy of accuseing the spanish of racism while employeing a guy called ian wright the ex arsenal player to work on the show when he actually played the race card and accused peter schmeichel of racism he ma it all up yet he is still working in the media and went on record to say ron atkinson was a racist a guy who did more for black players at the time than anybody else did many black players have come out and defended ron atkinson who played for him yet he is in the wilderness dont get me wrong what ron said was wrong and he said sorry but why is it ok fo ian wright to play the race card and pretend he never did while he still works in the media

Mr Coyle - presumably irish - is in no position to lecture on 'racism' when not a single black or coloured player has ever worn the green of his own country, or indeed the blue of scotland, that other self-proclaimed haven of multiculturalism with scarcely an immigrant to its name.

As to this trivial if revealing incident bearing 'all the hallmarks' of Ron Atkinson's outburst the suggestion is utterly preposterous. Best spoke unthinkingly, inadvertently laying bare the authorities' anti-white agenda, the one they prefer not to discuss. His crime, in fact, was to embarrass them by innocently repeating what he knew to be true, what had been made clear to him in the past.

This was no 'quip'. Nor was it in any way remotely racist - except in shedding light on the relentless behind-the-scenes pressure applied to English sport - never irish or scottish sport - to select non-white players and to exclude the English from their own national side. Selecting white people on racial grounds is of course illegal.

It reminds me of January 2005 when the Football Association put on sale a DVD of England's finest players. Since the only trophy English football has ever won is the World Cup it was no surprise that the 'best ever' selection of players were white.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, news cameras were invited to a press conference at which presided Thierry Henry of Arsenal, who is African and nothing whatever to do with England, along with Rio Ferdinand, a thinker, who proceeded to denounce the DVD as (yawn) 'racist' and 'insulting'.

The disc was quickly withdrawn. Neither of these oafs were capable of organizing such a drama themselves of course. Someone put them up to it. The same anti-English interests perhaps embarrassed by Dick Best's revealing remarks ealier today, and which have brought the usual demeaning mea culpas and wholly unecessary apologies?

I wonder how folk will react when English sport finally has no place for white people at all - as is near as dammit the case all ready in France? Will they demand quotas for us in the interests of 'fairness'? I didn't think so. Thank you Dick - you did nothing but tell the truth.

brainbiter so what your saying is you want tomove the goal posts cos you cant handle the competition and your acting the victim its allways the case you remind me of my childhood i used to know people like you you would run home and take your bat and ball home when the competition got too much instead of perservering and believeing in your own ability and putting your head down showing the heart and desire to better yourself get a grip you mug sport is about being selected on a level playing field and being judged on your ability it makes no diffrence where you come from ifyour good enough you will get in but dont start crying when the black kids and ethnic minority kids who are born and bred in england and part of the fabric of this great country go on and play for there country one day or choose to play for there parents heritage as ryan giggs did that is there chioce just for the record thierry henry was born in france his parents background is from africa but he us french born and proud like i said sport is about being picked on merit and ability its not rocket science i hear a lot of people moan about the arsenal team yet these kids are picked on ability not the colour of the passport or religion nobody wants to see mediocre english and british kids fast tracked if there not good enough the same with foreign kids everybody should be judged on merit

I shouldn't dignify this drivel with a reply but out of courtesy I draw your attention to the following:

1) Dick Best, a former England trainer, was referring to a policy of allocating places on grounds of colour rather than ability known to him from his own experience in the job. He made no racial slur of any kind.

2) His words and the reaction to it tell us the policy is publicly unacknowledged. It is secret. That is why people asked the perfectly innocent question as to why Delon Armitage was preferred to the superior Irishman Tommy Bowe.

3) The conclusion has to be that Dick Best inadvertently shed light on procedures his former bosses would prefer to remain hidden. Picking people because they are black is legal. Picking them because they are white is illegal. Discuss.

I don't much care whether the penny drops and you spot the contradictions or the reasons for them. Sentimental nonsense about picking the best man for the job and fair competition obtain their profoundest answer in the story itself.

If you are white I advise a little less television and a little more reading. Your spelling is good, your punctuation appalling. There is probably a powerful streak of self-dislike underpinning all this too of course. That is your problem - or more likely one of your many.

brainbitter you make me laugh pal i know we live in a spin culture but you really take the biscuit pal i dont know your background in terms of work but i have been in sport all my life and i am telling you for a fact any coach or scout worth his salt would never pick a player because he was black to make up the numbers you allways get a minority of clowns out there who will pick there mates or exclude black, white or asian folk from playing due to there very nature they are racist and xenophobic they are a minority sport is about talent allways has been allways will be if your good enough then you should be given a chance on a level playing field i dont care what dick best thinks and his like if he thought there were players being selected for great britain while he was coach based on there colour race or religion he should have said something instead of being some smart alec and trying to make a joke at somebody elses expense but what really intrigues me is you and your mickey mouse comments about thierry henry rio ferdinad and the french national team especially as you have not done your homework and know very little about sport the likes of viv anderson and paul ince were fantastic players for england and ince went on to captain his country it was not that long ago black players would get monkey chants by there own english fans i dont care if there is a black asian or any other person who is born here whose parents originate from whichever part of the world they are english in my eyes unless they choose otherwise and they would be entitled to represent the homeland of there parents like giggsy did

Your reach exceeds your grasp. You haven't the first idea what nationhood is. You fail to distinguish between nation, state and country, while your understanding of 'racism' and 'xenophobia' appears to have been have been absorbed courtesy of the nice man on televison. You haven't even the humility to acknowledge that Dick Best might know more about this particular case than you.

It is common for fear to masquerade as enlightenment in our exciting new society, but in any case there is a point when sheer bovine stupidity renders discussion futile, and since you haven't a clue what is under examination here, and no interest, it seems, in its implications for those who's ancestors built this country, I have reached that point. There is nothing to add. We're done. The last word is with you if you want it (you will, if I'm any judge).

brainbitter what i can tell you is i have been in sport most of my life i have played the game and coach kids now and i am telling you for a fact dick best does not know what he is talking about he is limited for him to even suggest black players are being picked based on the colour of there skin in the case of armitage and not on his talent and ability is a total insult how you can defend him beggers belief i have never in all my years ever picked a white, black mixed race kid or asian youngster on his skin colour it has allways been on merit and the balance of the team ihave allways stayed true to my principles i dont care what parents think i treat all kids exactly the same that is my phillosophy and vision on the game i have been in the game long enough not to suffer fools easily and believe me i have come across the likes of dick best and yourself and allways found a weakness in the character same old story

I agree with you about media hounds getting away with only simple limp wrist slappings over egregious racist comments, but I do wish you would have used punctuation instead of one long long long long sentence to get your point across.
