UK Sport, the body which channels Lottery funding to elite sport in Britain, announced this morning a new drive for private sector sponsorship, ahead of the 2012 Games in London.|
'Team 2012' will pool branding rights to help the various Olympic bodies boost their income from sponsors. Earlier this year the DCMS confessed to a funding shortfall for Team GB, as a result of the failure to raise private sector cash.
One can't help but feel that, submerged beneath the spin today, is a confession that raising money for the Games from the private sector continues to be extremely tough.
Which is quite understandable, of course. But trying to conceal that fact under the auspice of another new initiative is pure mendacity. Given all the furore over the budget, organiser's ought really to know that mendacity isn't a very good option.
